Don’t FOMO While you YOLO // 3 Things about God you might not realize

The grass is greener on the other side is something we’ve heard for ages, but we’ve never been exposed to as much of other people’s grass as we are now. Their lush, flourishing lawns parade across our computer screens, over our tablets, and through our mobile phones and we fear we’re missing out on having the best, greenest grass. Hence, FOMO – the Fear of Missing Out.

Meanwhile, finishing any statement with “YOLO” has become like touching base in a game of tag.

Should I get totally wasted this weekend regardless of the consequences? YOLO!

Should I sleep with whoever I want?  YOLO!

Once you call “YOLO,” all judgments are off. “YOLO” has become an excuse to do whatever we want. After all, You Only Live Once. Might as well live it up while you can, right?

FOMO and YOLO reveal something about us as a culture and about us as individuals: We don’t want to miss out on stuff while we live a crazy awesome life! We have a hunger for more. Here are three really cool things about God that you might not know as they relate to that FOMO/YOLO life.

1.       God wants you to have a YOLO-Kind-of-Life

God wants each and every one of us to live an awesome, YOLO kind-of-life (Jeremiah 29:11); but, not using YOLO as an excuse to do anything we want. YOLO gets it right: Our lives are short, and we should live with a level of urgency. But, that urgency is less about how short our lives are and more about loving and caring for people so they see the love and hope of Jesus through us. It’s about taking as many people with us to Heaven as possible, and living an awesome, crazy happy, contagious kind of life along the way.

2.       God has an amazing plan for you, so run your race – not someone else’s

Each of us has a purpose, a reason for being where we are, and God has a race set out for us to run! (Hebrews 12:1)  He doesn’t want us to hop from lane to lane running into the plans He has for other people, tripping over obstacles that should’ve never been in our way, or face-planting because we stumbled into stuff that was never meant for us. When we go all-in for Jesus, we know that life gets better every day. When we focus on Him consistently by praying and by reading the Bible, we won’t get sidetracked.

3.       God IS MORE

We’re afraid we’re missing out on our children growing up. We’re afraid we’re missing out on that other great career. We’re afraid we’ll never go on that vacation, we’ll never have that awesome ability that someone else has, that amazing spouse, those perfectly behaved children, or those financial opportunities.  Yet, for all the bad things FOMO can be, it reveals to us that we WANT MORE. We have this insatiable hunger for something beyond ourselves. God IS MORE! (Ephesians 3:20-21)

We established in #1 and #2 that God wants us to have an life, and He has a purpose for each of us. So we have to understand, realize, and trust that God is able to do what we ask and what we imagine. Not only, is He able to do ALL we ask AND ALL we imagine; He is able to do immeasurably MORE than what we ask or imagine… Because that’s God. It’s who He is. His plans for our lives are so much bigger and better than we can even fathom.  When we live knowing that, we can know that the best is yet to come.
